Why Use Audio Compression?
This next example shows why compression is used. The upper and lower line represent the digital audio limit. This is the maximum volume or audio level. Anything beyond this point is simply not possible and anything going over it will be cut off and sound strange and/or like distortion.

Note how this is just an example and this kind of sound simply does not exist. The three sines would normally be one signal (1 line) but this way you will immediately see how compression works and why it is used.
The three lines can be considered anything either a guitar sound with low/mid and high frequencies, or a mix with three different instruments. When we simply increase the volume the green will move out of the limits and will cause distortion. The other sounds will sound louder and this is what we generally want.
