Velvet Thunder broke sound barriers at High Sierra Music FestivalEngineers Steve Ehrlich and Bill Walker, owners of Velvet Thunder, broke the sound barriers at High Sierra Music Festival with their new Audient Aztec Live Performance console, supplied by Audio Exchange International, Inc. (AXI). After seeing the Aztec in action at the notorious Nightclub 930 in Washington, D.C., where high-profile bands Puddle of Mud, Vertical Horizon, and Ben Harper performed, Ehrlich and Walker knew that they had to get their hands on one.“The Aztec sounds amazing,” says Walker, who has used it as a monitor console. “As far as analog graphs, there’s nothing superior. After running it with performers Lucinda Williams and John Doe, I was especially impressed by the monitor rigs sound and the fidelity. Ultimately, the Aztec is going to be used for a lot of shows.” Ideal for touring, the Audient Aztec Live Performance console features an innovative rugged lightweight frame structure and class-leading audio performance with 12 VCA sub groups with VCA solo, 4 band EQ with parametric mid, optional full stereo out put modules, as well as many other extensive features. “Velvet Thunder is a touring sound company and is always in a different venue,” says Chris Walsh, director of sales and marketing for AXI. “They needed a console that is easily transportable, but still has the powerful equalizers that a stationary Audient has. The new Aztec Live Performance console is designed specifically for the sound reinforcement, professional, used equally at home, on the road, or in a fixed installation.” The Aztec is available in four frame sizes providing 32, 40, 48 or 52 inputs, 2 additional stereo line inputs, and a stereo ambience mic input. Its high-tech feature set is the result of long experience combined with the feedback of many respected sound reinforcement professionals. “We’re able to use it on monitor shows for 12 mixes and put it in as a house desk,” says Ehrlich who used it as a front of house console. “It’s an excellent console and so easy to set up! It doesn’t take more than two guys to set it up and run it. We do a lot of shows where we are teamed up with really big national sound companies that do tour work, so this audient really helps us out and saves us time.” Velvet Thunder also used the Aztec console for the opening support of String Cheese Incident at Hornings Hideout in North Plains, OR. Located in Eugene, OR, Velvet Thunder has worked with such major artists as Chrissy Hynde and the Pretenders, POD, and Mary Chapin-Carpenter.
