Phonic new INCEPTION Active Speaker

Phonic announced development of the Inception active speaker series, with the first model of the series – Inception 12 DSP, a 2-way active speaker with Phonic’s own “Theorem DSP” – due to be released Q2, 2011. Due to follow in the months after is the Inception 18, an 18” active subwoofer speaker.

In addition to the 550 Watt (RMS) of power that drives the 12” long-throw composite woofer and 1.75’’ pure titanium compression tweeter, the Inception 12 DSP features Phonic’s own 40-bit Theorem Digital Signal Processor. This controls a number of additional onboard features, including a 4th order Linkwitz–Riley crossover, driver time-alignment, onboard delay, feedback killer, “smart” equalization and a full range of speaker protection circuitry.

“When developing our Inception speakers we decided to provide a number of features not previously found on loudspeakers,” says Grant Murray, Phonic Product Marketing Specialist. “The most obvious of these is the feedback killer. We’ve already implemented a similar system in our Powerpod powered mixers, but incorporating them into the Inception 12 DSP speakers will help eliminate feedback directly at the source.”

He continues, “Equalization on speakers may not sound like the most innovative function, but we have taken a simple idea to a whole new level. Phonic has implemented a 3-setting EQ for both high and low frequency sounds; contouring signals to the speaker’s strengths rather than slapping on a flat 3dB boost like other loudspeakers may have.”

The Inception 12 DSP also includes a 2 channel mixer, each channel with its own variable level control. Remote gain control is possible through the 4-pin Phoenix connectors. A wide range of input connectors are available including ¼” TRS, XLR and stereo RCA. Phonic includes a mic/line contour switch to adjust the input sensitivity of inputs.

The Inception 12 DSP is built withstand the rigors of the road, with its dense, impact resistant polymer shell. An internal bracing system was included to reduce internal vibrations and help maximize the 131 dB sound pressure level. Three M10 fly points, a 35 mm pole mount hole and a dual angled enclosure ensure flexible setup options.

More Inception speakers are in the works, including the aforementioned Inception 18. Check out the Inception 12 DSP at this year’s Prolight+Sound Show in Frankfurt, Germany between the 6th and 9th of April. Phonic can be found in booth K41, hall 8 with an entire range of new live, studio and installation products.
