Harley Davidson uses dbx ZonePRO Music System
The Harley-Davidson dealerships in Ann Arbor and neighboring Brighton, Michigan, regularly hum with the trademark sound of Harley motorcycles idling and riding through the shops’ parking lots. In fact, those lots have become extensions of the dealership floors, thanks to the famous camaraderie that Harley-Davidson riders have historically shared, coupled with the precise zoned audio made possible at the dealerships’ facilities with the legendary dbx ZonePRO. Harleys have their own distinct sound and it can be pretty loud, but the ZonePRO gets the dealers’ messages across to the customers every time.
Ann Arbor Audio worked with the staff at both Harley-Davidson dealerships. What John Malek, President of Ann Arbor Audio, noticed when he arrived was that the lots in front of and on the side the stores are extended social neighborhoods: areas for customers to gather in before and during the many events the dealerships sponsor. “Harley dealerships sponsor a lot of events and group rides, and these will originate in the parking lots,” Malek explains. “The sound system has several key things to accomplish. It has to get the right information to the right groups about events going on so that everyone knows where to rally. As the owners of the V-Twin engines rev up, it’s a serious amount of ambient noise that needs to be heard over. It also has to convey timely information about products, parts pickups, repair calls, tie into the paging system, and everything else that goes on at a busy dealership. That’s why the ZonePRO system was the perfect choice for these installations.”
At both the Ann Arbor and Brighton stores, Malek specified the ZonePRO 640 to create four discrete audio zones and signal paths: two outdoor areas in the shops’ two parking lots, one for the repair area and one for the main sales floor. Each area was equipped with a dbx ZC-8 remote controller. The ZonePRO 640 unit itself was located in an office adjacent to a 200-Watt/ch 70 volt, 4-channel amplifier. “This gave us the ultimate in compactness — a very small footprint for the base system versus using four mono amplifiers,” says Malek. “The ZonePRO enabled us to create this system quickly and get it up and running easily. Using a laptop computer, you can set it up quickly and accurately, making future changes to the system, when necessary, very efficient. And the ZonePRO reliability is legendary.”
