An essential introduction to Mixing

Before going into mixing concepts and technical details you need to have an idea of what your task as a mixing engineer or mixing musician is. Anyone who has tried to mix a song for the first time will probably tell you that they thought it was fun but the end result was not something that can be compared to the type of sound they where aiming for. Especially with most people having computers, digital mixers, professional effects and a good monitoring system, the essential parts are missing; knowledge and experience. The next time a beginner will mix a song it will maybe come out a little better. But as most find out, if you don’t know what to listen for you will not improve much. In many ways it is like learning to play an instrument. It might take you years to get a little better if you don’t know how to improve. So an important part of mixing is trying to improve so you can get the results that you want.

So if you practice enough, learn enough, and have the equipment can you be a good mixing engineer? Again compare yourself to a musician. There are many good musicians but there are also factors as luck, creativity, knowing the right people, getting a signature sound etc. Some of these factors can be important but sometimes they are not.
