Allen & Heath Live Sound Mixing Consoles for London's QEII Conference CentreHertfordshire-based Mercury AV has supplied a total of six Allen & Heath live sound consoles to London's QEII Conference Centre (QEIICC). The purchase comes as the result of an upgrade to the Centre's audio equipment, and models have been selected from the manufacturer's multi-purpose GL range and compact powered PA Series.Situated in London's political hub, opposite the Palace of Westminster, the QEIICC is a hi-tech, purpose-built venue hosting a variety of private and public sector events with 4 main auditoria, 7 conference rooms and over 20 smaller meeting rooms across 7 floors, plus 2,000m˛ of exhibition space. The Centre has its own in-house AV department, Interface, which continuously monitors and updates its technology. "All our equipment is of a top technical specification to satisfy the requirements of our high profile client base. Furthermore, the equipment we use needs to be very reliable as many of the conferences we run have live broadcast links to TV studios and the BT Tower, so it is crucial that we can rely on our kit," comments Interface's AV Production Manager, Derek Chalmers. "We needed an overhaul of our audio mixers, to take advantage of the most up-to-date sound and performance quality, as well as increasing capacity" Chalmers continues. "We already own several Allen & Heath mixers, and they have provided all the operating features we need, great sound quality and at a price that suits the budget." A 32-channel GL3800 dual-function console has been installed as the house mixer in the Fleming Room - the Centre's second largest auditorium - whilst a 24-channel GL2400 has been installed in one of the smaller suites. Four compact powered PA12-CP mixers have been employed as part of portable PA systems for the smaller conference rooms. The investment adds to the venue's existing A&H portfolio, which includes an ML4000 VCA console in the largest suite - the Churchill Room - as well as several other GL range mixers. "Firstly, the Allen & Heath mixers offer great sonic quality, which is obviously paramount in our business. The GL desks offer plenty of capacity, as we often need to cater for around 20 microphones, as well as provide broadcast and webcast feeds. The EQ is great and the matrices take the pressure off the main outputs. The small PA mixers are fantastic for use in our conference rooms, we were amazed at the sound and build quality in such a small desk - it really shows compared with other desks on the market. Also, on a practical note, because they are powered we don't need separate amps, making them ideal for portable systems," concludes Chalmers.
